The Star Wars universe has expanded once again with the much-anticipated series, “The Acolyte”. Set in the final days of the High Republic era, this new installment offers a fresh perspective on the galaxy far, far away, delving into the dark side of the Force. With the first five episodes already premiered, “The Acolyte” has captivated audiences with its intricate storytelling, compelling characters, and stunning visuals.

Created by Leslye Headland, this thrilling new show takes us on a journey to the final days of the High Republic era, a time when jedis were at the height of power, peace and prosperity within the Jedi Order – or so it seems. This will be a full-of-spoiler review of all five episodes that have premiered so far.

In an Age of Light, A Darkness Rises

The Acolyte ushers us into a time roughly 100 years before the prequel trilogy. The once-peaceful High Republic reigns supreme, with the Jedi Order serving as guardians of peace and justice. However, a shadow begins to creep at the fringes. A series of disturbing crimes plagues the galaxy, hinting at a darkness that threatens to erupt.

The story revolves around a former Padawan, Osha (Amandala Stenberg) who reunites with her Jedi Master, Sol (Lee Jung-jae) to investigate a series of crimes. However, they soon discover that the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated. The show promises a fresh perspective on the galaxy far, far away, focusing on the enigmatic Acolytes – dark side Force users who serve the Sith.

Episode Guide

Episode 1: “Lost/Found” – A Promising Start

The Acolyte kicks off with a strong premiere, introducing us to the main characters and setting the stage for the impending conflict. We meet Mae, again played by Amandala Stenberg, a young Force-sensitive woman with a mysterious past, and her twin sister Osha, who has chosen a different path, becoming a mechanic (meknek) on Coruscant.

The episode also introduces us to the Jedi, led by the enigmatic Master Sol, played by the talented Lee Jung-Jae. As they investigate a series of attacks on Jedi, they cross paths with Mae, who seems to be the prime suspect.

The episode ends with a tantalizing cliffhanger, none other than the death of Carrie Anne-Moss’s, Indara after an epic fight with Mae, leaving viewers eager to uncover the truth behind Mae’s actions. Elsewhere, Mae meets with her mysterious master, who challenges her with a task to kill a Jedi without using any weapon.

Episode 2: “Revenge/Justice” – Exploring the Gray

In the second episode, the mystery deepens as we further get a chance to explore into the moral complexities of the Jedi Order. We witness Mae’s quest for vengeance against a Jedi Master Torbin, who she believes is responsible for a tragic event in her past.

The episode explores the gray area between the light and dark sides of the Force, as Mae’s actions challenge the Jedi’s principles of compassion and forgiveness. Amandla Stenberg’s powerful performance as both Mae and Osha adds depth to the twins’ conflicting perspectives.

This episode also introduces Qimir, a character played by Manny Jacinto, who seems to be assisting Mae in her mission. However, his true allegiance remains shrouded in mystery, adding to the growing sense of intrigue.

Episode 3: “Destiny” – Secrets Unraveled

The third episode takes us to the planet Brendok, where we learn more about Mae and Osha’s past. The flashbacks reveal the sisters’ connection to a mysterious coven of Force-sensitive witches leader, Mother Aniseya who also happens to be Osha and Mae’s mother. Hinting at the larger forces at play in the galaxy.

Episode 4: “Day” – The Sith Apprentice’s Agenda

In the fourth episode, the Jedi team, including Osha, travels to the planet Khofar, where they tracked Mae through the force connection between her and Osha. Meanwhile, Mae and Qimir race to find and eliminate a target named Kelnacca (Joona Suotamo) before the Jedi can intervene.

The episode culminates in a thrilling confrontation, as the Jedi face off against a mysterious Sith wielding a red lightsaber. This cliffhanger leaves viewers speculating about the identity of this Sith and their connection to the events unfolding.

Episode 5: “Night” – A Shocking Revelation

Completely upending the narrative, and delivering a not-so-shocking revelation, but still a good one that shakes the foundations of the Jedi Order.

In a breathtaking sequence, the Jedi are brutally executed by the Sith Master, whose identity is revealed to be Qimir, and Mae’s true mentor. The episode’s relentless pace and the merciless way in which central characters are killed off leave a lasting impact, cementing Qimir as a formidable and uncompromising villain.

The Acolyte’s fifth episode also delves deeper into the Jedi’s questionable practices, as we learn that they have been bringing young Force-sensitive individuals into combat, a decision that has dire consequences.

Verdict

With three more episodes to go, “The Acolyte” hasn’t been without its flaws – some awkward dialogue and a smaller scope compared to the Skywalker saga – but it compensates with rich character development and a fresh perspective. The old-school Jedi, with their raw power and vulnerability, steal the show. Fans of Star Wars lore will appreciate the deep dives into Sith history and the moral complexities faced by the Acolytes.

And That’s a Wrap-up…For Now

The Acolyte has proven to be a captivating addition to the Star Wars universe, offering a fresh perspective on the conflict between the Jedi and the Sith. With its strong performances, intricate storytelling, and a willingness to explore the moral ambiguities of the Force, the series has the potential to become a standout in the franchise.

As we eagerly await the remaining episodes, especially another round of fight between Qimir, Vernestra Rwoh (Rebecca Henderson) with her lightsaber whip, and some other jedis as seen in the trailers, the show’s ability to subvert expectations and deliver shocking twists has left viewers on the edge of their seats, eager to uncover the full extent of the Sith’s machinations and the fate of the Jedi Order. The Acolyte is a must-watch for any Star Wars fan seeking a captivating and thought-provoking exploration of the galaxy’s darkest secrets.
